7 Ways to Beat the Summertime Heat in Ocean City, MD

Crowds flock to the beach every summer to enjoy an Ocean City, MD vacation and stay cool. While nothing beats the city heat, it can still get toasty in town. Here are seven ways to beat the summertime heat while at the beach.

  1. Jump in the ocean!

It may seem fairly obvious to most but the average water temperature in August in Ocean City is around 71 degrees. The water is very refreshing and can cool your skin off instantly! Even if you’re not an ocean lover, move your beach chair as close to the ocean as possible to feel the cool breeze almost always coming off the water.

  1. Play in the bay!

Watersports are extensive in Ocean City, MD and it’s a great way to have fun while staying cool! Rent a pontoon boat or jet ski to explore the bay, take a stand-up paddleboard class offered at Fagers, surf on the designated surf beaches for the day, or book a ride on the Sea Rocket and feel the ocean breeze as you speed along the coast of Maryland.

  1. Take a break to eat.

Ocean City has close to 500 restaurants to choose from in just 10 short miles so there is no shortage of food to eat at the beach. You can practically sit in the water at restaurants like Macky’s and Ropewalk. Or if prefer to extend your dining experience with AC blowing on your sun-kissed skin, try out one of the all-you-can eat buffets like Embers or the Bonfire in town.

  1. Visit the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum

Relive the adventures of the U.S. Life-Saving Service, a predecessor of today's Coast Guard, at the accurately restored Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum located on Atlantic Avenue at the southern-most end of the Ocean City Boardwalk.

  1. Sip a cool cocktail

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Visit Harborside in West Ocean City near the commercial fishing harbor to grab Ocean City’s signature fresh-squeezed orange crush (and where the drink originated!) or jump on a raft at Seacrets to sip refreshing cocktails in de bay!

  1. Shop till you drop

When the temperatures rise, go inside local Ocean City, MD surf and boutique shops to browse souvenirs to bring back from the beach. Looking to do some back to school shopping? Ocean City and Rehoboth Beach (just a short drive away) are known for their large selection of outlet shopping.

  1. Grab a sweet treat to beat the heat

The Ocean City Boardwalk has ice cream shops on every corner and while Dumsers and Kohr Bros. definitely own the market, the Sweet Spot on 14th street and the boardwalk (outside the Commander Hotel) offers a slight twist on an old-time favorite that is worth checking out.
